Retirement Gift?

Our much beloved boss is retiring. We know that she has financial concerns for the future and would have liked to work another year or two, but her job was eliminated and she's been forced out. We are doing a scrapbook and taking a collection for a gift. I was told today that we were just going hand over the money to her and not purchase a gift. I'm really not comforatble with this. I'm sure she would appreciate it greatly, but I think giving her the money outright is awkward. I had suggested that we purchase a gift certificate for her hair dresser as she was telling us she would have to discontinue her services and dye her hair on her own.

What do you think? Is giving money for a retirement gift kinda awkward and maybe a bit tacky? Also, do you have any other gift certifcate ideas? I know she doesn't want any material posessions as she is cleaning out and selling her house. I was thinking more service oriented things so she can "treat" herself.

I rather agree with you...I'm not in favor of handing over a cash gift in this situation. I like the idea of a gift card...supermarkets in my area offer them...maybe that could be an option...or even a generic store lake Target...that everyone can find something in. I'm not as keen on the hairdresser idea though...can't place my finger on why, it but it seems a bit odd. Trust your gut...but remember...it's a gift from the group...so majority should rule. Whatever the outcome...I'm sure she'll appreciate the gift...so go with the flow if need be.

How about a universal gift card, like American Express, that's used in many places, including the place where she gets her hair done.

If you limit it to one place, she's out of luck if the place goes out of business (happened to me!) or if she moves out of the area.

The hair dresser one is a great idea. You heard her say she'd have to cancel. The others should take the hint %26amp; go with your idea. A restaurant gift cert. is always nice too.

I'm not so sure just giving her cash is very thoughful. %26amp; she might find it awkward.

You should go with some sort of gift cert.

Get a gift certificate for the home depot, since she is clearning out her old accomadations, her new ones wil more than likely be alittle sparse. She can add a "touch" from the home depot.
