"HELP" To be a dog groomer do you have to.......?

Go to school to learn how to groom animals do you have to have a license to be a groomer, like when some becomes a hair dresser, they go to school, and get a license to operate a shop. Is being a groomer, (pet) the same way. Could someone tell me how it works. Thanks

We live in upstate New York. My niece went to Manhattan to a school for about three months if I recall correctly. She received a certificate of completion but as far as licensing, that would be a local requirement or a state by state issue. New York does not require dog groomers to be licensed.

Make sure you do your homework before choosing a school as some are just nonsense-taking your money for minimal training! Go to a school that has a grooming center where you get daily "hands on" training! It isn't as easy as it looks--- especially when you start doing dogs like poodles that have all the fancy ornaments!

Great business to get into and my niece makes a very good living at what she does!

PS: Honey Child is very misinformed! Yes, you could start that way if you want to take a life time getting to the grooming stages where you make the "big bucks"! As I previously stated, it isn't as easy as it looks and takes a lot of training and "hands on" experience! You will get that at a "reputable" school! Of course, you will still have much to learn and plenty of needed hands on before you acquire top performance!

You can do a course in dog grooming, but its not the same as becoming a hair dresser, you dont have to go to school for it. In order to get a job straight away, doing a course would be the way to go, but you can also start by getting a job such as washer/dryer in a groomers and learning by practical experience, then they may later on hire you as a groomer once you have watched and learned.

ETA Im from Australia by the way, I dont know what its like where you live. Here i could just open up a groomers tomorrow with no prior experience! (I wouldnt though!!)

hi, good luck! ok in australia you need no prior experience to just groom home dogs..i would never touch a show dog for a good while till you know the breed standards. mind you you could practice show styles on mutts that are similar..why not!

there are some great how to clip books. try s/hand like on alibris.com as they can be round the 130$ mark. i paid that!

always buy the best 2 speed clipper you can, try oster and sunbeam they are reliable! 2 sets of all blades, you wont believe how some coats can dull a blade. and 2 sets of clippers allows you to let one set cool down! they do run hot in the hands.

NOW this warning is cos i almost died from a cat clipping i did!! i am SERIOUS!

i got fur ,a tiny segment, embedded in a knuckle joint, it went in, not out, and as a result i was infected with Bartonella Hensellae.

ie common name cat scratch fever! it has killed and caused serious illness in young children in particular.

it is very rare, and took the doctors over 6months to isolate it in me. meanwhile i was actually given 2 weeks to live at age 38 1/2.

always always wear long sleeve guards and aprons no matter how hot you are, please. always wash any areas with hair irritation, usually wrists and inner elbows! with tea tree oil in dilution, to sterilise and it freshens you up too!

and also unless an owner is totally insistant..use a strongish t.t.oil,shampoo and conditioner for fleas. stay away from the drops on back ones and any of the brands that use a zylene.malathion base. if we need to wear gloves and avoid fumes or touching till dry.

well as an allover body poison bath..how good is that for our mates!?? as a groomer it is way over safe contact volumes i feel, to be round this many times per day.

all the best, Laurel

most state require that you go to a school, You can also go to some of the pet stores like petco and work as a washer dryer, for the groomers and if you do a good enough job of that then they will send you to school. It is a good idea if you are interested in starting out working for a groomer, see if you like it there is alot more to it than what peole think. Also do a career research before doing anything and see if it will be something that could support you money wise, Just having a love of dogs or cats sometimes seems like enough to do a job, but if you want to make money then do something that you know for a fact that you love and you will succeed. Remember also that sometimes what we think we like turns out to be something we don't like at all. Completely diffrent than what we thought it would be . Go see a groomer and ask alot of qestions, not just one but many.
